Who we are

Phu - An overview

To be fair, “we” isn’t the right word. Syzygy Marketing is just me - Phu Bui. “Who I am” sounded more self absorbed than I wanted, so here we are.

With that out of the way, who is Phu, and why is he referring to himself in the 3rd person? I am:

• a paid advertising expert who’s been working in the space for over a decade.

• a family man. Loving husband and father.

• a nerd, whether it’s about music theory, video games, camping gear, astronomy, and whatever else I get deeply into.

I mention all this because you’ll probably see these little hints of my life on my home office wall behind me if we have a chance to meet, but I’m also just the kind of guy who thinks it helps build stronger working relationships if you know a little bit about the person on the other end of the proverbial line.

How’d you get here?

To be honest, I didn’t leave the security and comfort of a steady corporate paycheck of my own accord. In September of 2025, I experienced some hard changes in my life that really boiled down to two major events:

1. I had to say goodbye to my beloved dog of 13 years, Boba.

2. A week later, my senior director role was eliminated at the company I was working for.

These experiences made me pause and take stock of what matters to me in my life and consider how I’m spending my time and energy. I’d been thinking about trying to strike out on my own as a consultant for years, but I’d always been too afraid to do it for a bazillion different reasons, and then I found myself in the position of either going straight back into hunting for a corporate job or betting on myself.

I think you can tell which path I chose.

Why should I work with you?

I won’t bore you with paragraphs, so here comes a bullet list.

• I’m deeply experienced in what I do. Even after making it to the senior director level and managing large teams of other marketers, it remained important to me to continue executing because I wanted to stay in touch with the skill and simply because I think the work is fun.

• I really value building relationships with the people I partner with. I don’t want to just be someone who’s doing the work for you day in and day out behind the scenes. We can do our best work together when we know, trust, and believe in each other.

• It’s my commitment to be fair, honest, and transparent with the people I’m working with.

Wait. Those bullets ended up being paragraphs anyway. If it’s any consolation to you, think of this as the evidence that AI didn’t write all this. :)

I actually don’t care about any of that. What the heck is a syzygy?

Oh right. That.

To be honest, I can’t remember where I heard the word the first time. I think it was in reference to some band or something, but when I looked it up, it really stuck with me, especially because I’ve been a space nerd since I was a kid. Here’s Wikipedia’s definition:

In astronomy, a syzygy is a roughly straight-line configuration of three or more celestial bodies in a gravitational system.

The word is often used in reference to the Sun, Earth, and either the Moon or a planet, where the latter is in conjunction or opposition. Solar and lunar eclipses occur at times of syzygy, as do transits and occultations.

There are a ton of words in there that mean nothing to me, but hey, a lot had to line up in my life for me to be here talking to you through this About Us page.
